Once known for its serene landscapes and tight-knit communities, Buhweju District in Western Uganda is now grappling with a disturbing rise in violent crime. Recent incidents have painted a grim picture of a district struggling to maintain peace and security.

Innocence Lost: Shocking murder of a two-year-old
In the most recent and heart-wrenching incident, Buhweju District Police is investigating the alleged murder of Akandwanaho Kellian, a two-year-old Munyankole boy and resident of Kazirwa A Cell, Muziguru Parish, Bitsya Sub-county.
According to eyewitnesses, the child was allegedly killed by his biological mother, 28-year-old Kwetegyeka Immaculate, who was seen kicking and stepping on him—actions that led to the child's death.

Police responded promptly, secured the scene, and transported the body to Nsiika Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination. The suspect was arrested at the scene. Residents allege that Kwetegyeka has a history of mental illness and she is set to undergo a medical examination to aid the ongoing investigations.

ASP Apollo Tayebwa, Acting Police Spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi Region, confirmed the incident.
“We condemn this tragic incident in the strongest terms,” said ASP Tayebwa. “As investigations proceed, we urge the public to be vigilant and report any signs of mental illness within households. Prevention begins at the community level.”

Domestic disputes turning deadly
This is not the first domestic-related murder reported in the district this year. In April 2025, the community was shaken by the brutal killing of 53-year-old Patrick Bainomugisha by his wife, Nshemererwe. She confessed to clubbing him to death during a domestic altercation and burying his body beneath their bedroom floor in Kaniga I Village.

Police revealed that the dispute arose from disagreements over family responsibilities, particularly the payment of school fees. “The cause of the murder is domestic violence,” confirmed the Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson.
In another chilling case, 34-year-old Wilbroad Ayebazibwe allegedly killed his six-year-old son, Linus Akampwera, in Kamakanda Village. Reportedly intoxicated, Ayebazibwe was attempting to strike his wife with a machete but fatally wounded the boy instead.

Law enforcement officers not spared
Even law enforcement officers have not been spared. In August 2024, Alex Kajwarire, a prison warder, was beaten to death in Kakiika Cell, Nsiika Town Council. Investigations revealed the attack stemmed from a romantic relationship with a married woman. Four suspects, including the woman’s sons, were arrested in connection with the murder.

Mob justice and vigilantism
Mob justice has also taken root in the district. In October 2024, 28-year-old Louis Kiiza was lynched by residents in Katabago Village after being accused of stealing chickens. His body was later found dumped in a banana plantation. Local leaders strongly condemned the act and warned the public against taking the law into their own hands.

A call for collective action
The recent surge in violent incidents has prompted concern and response from law enforcement. Police have intensified community engagement to identify households at risk due to domestic tensions and mental health challenges.
ASP Tayebwa underscored the need for a united approach: “Security is a shared responsibility. We urge residents to report individuals exhibiting violent tendencies or mental distress. Let’s work together to prevent such senseless loss of life.”
