Police in Kanungu District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 47-year-old Jackson Orishaba, a resident of Kyikondeka Village in Bushura Parish, Kirima Sub-county, who was allegedly lynched by a mob over suspected cattle theft. According to Elly Maate, the incident occurred on April 3, 2026, at around 10:00 pm in Rwengona Village, Bushura Parish.

“It is alleged that the deceased had been away from home, residing in Bwindi, where he was conducting his personal business. On the fateful day, he decided to return home to spend the Easter holiday with his mother in Kyikondeka,” Maate said.

Maate further explained that Orishaba reportedly stopped at a local bar on his way home to drink alcohol.

“At around 10:00 pm, he left the bar, and it is alleged that shortly after, he attempted to steal a cow. He was intercepted by a mob that assaulted him, leaving him in critical condition,” he added.

The following day, April 4, 2026, his daughter, Ronnah Nasasira, rushed him to Katate Medical Center. He was later referred to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital and subsequently to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for further management.
“He succumbed to his injuries on April 9, 2026, at around 11:00 pm,” Maate confirmed.

The body was later transported back home, and Nasasira reported the matter to Kanungu Police Station.
Police officers visited the scene, retrieved the body, and transported it to Katate Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police have condemned acts of mob justice and urged the public to always hand over suspects to authorities for proper investigation and due process. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
