Government allocates ushs 200 million shillings for the construction of Kabwohe Mid-Market

Sheema - The government has allocated Shs 200 million for the construction of Kabwohe Mid-Market in Kabwohe Town, Sheema Municipality. The announcement was made by Sheema Municipality Member of Parliament, Dicksons Kateshumbwa, while addressing market vendors over the weekend. He revealed that the market, located along the Kabwohe–Masheruka road, will be constructed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade.

Kateshumbwa noted that the current market will be affected by the upcoming tarmacking of the Kabwohe–Masheruka road. To avoid disruption of business—especially for women, who make up the majority of the vendors—construction of the new market will begin before the roadworks commence.

He, however, acknowledged that the Shs 200 million allocated may not be sufficient to complete the project.
“We hope to supplement the funding with money from road compensation to ensure the market is completed,” he said.

Kateshumbwa also assured the traders that those currently operating in the market would be given first priority once the new facility is complete.
“I have asked the chairperson to compile and submit a list of all existing vendors so that they are the first to benefit from the new market,” he added.

In addition, he promised to engage the municipal council to consider reducing the taxes levied on vendors, which he said were a burden to many.

Juliet Kebirungi, Chairperson of Kabwohe Mid-Market, welcomed the development and highlighted several challenges currently affecting the market. These include a lack of electricity, poor sanitation, and the absence of a perimeter fence—factors she said have hindered effective operations. She also echoed the concern over high taxes, despite the market accommodating over 150 vendors.
“These issues have made it hard for us to operate efficiently and attract customers. We are hopeful that the new market will address them,” Kebirungi said.

The vendors lauded the MP for his tireless efforts to ensure the well-being of the people of Sheema Municipality by lobbying for essential services such as roads, markets, and improved infrastructure.
