Security agencies have arrested a man who has been masquerading as a senior Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) officer under the alias ‘General Isa’, in connection with a series of high-profile fraud cases targeting foreign investors. The suspect, whose real identity is yet to be officially disclosed, is accused of defrauding multiple foreign investors of billions of Ugandan shillings by falsely presenting himself as a UPDF general with influence in government and business circles.
According to a statement released by security services, the conman has been operating a well-orchestrated scheme that involved promising lucrative government contracts and business deals, using forged documents and impersonation of high-ranking officials to gain the trust of unsuspecting victims.
“The public is hereby informed that the notorious conman known as 'General Isa' has been arrested. He has scammed numerous foreign investors by pretending to be a UPDF General. He will be prosecuted in the courts of law accordingly,” the statement read.
Authorities have warned the public, especially foreign investors, to exercise due diligence when engaging in business dealings, and to report any suspicious individuals or activity to the nearest police station.
The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to be charged in court, with investigations into his network and possible accomplices still ongoing.
The UPDF has since distanced itself from the individual, reaffirming that he has never been a member of the armed forces and denouncing the misuse of the military’s name and image for personal gain.
