Community Volunteer Initiative for Development (COVOID) has donated 21 bicycles to members of Village Saving Groups (VSGs) in Kicwamba Sub-county, Rubirizi District, to support rural livelihoods and improve household incomes. The bicycles were distributed today at the COVOID offices in Nyakasharu Town Council.
According to Mr. Julius Barigye, the Project Coordinator at COVOID, the bicycles were given to 21 households to enhance access to markets, schools, and health centres.
“These bicycles will help the beneficiaries promote agriculture, education, marketing, and health within their communities. We encourage them to use the bicycles responsibly and not to sell them,”
Mr. Barigye said, adding that COVOID would continue monitoring their impact on livelihoods.
Mr. Ben Bataringaya, the Executive Director of COVOID, said the organization targets Village Saving Groups because they are easy to mobilize and already organized around community development.
“Each household received one bicycle to ease the transportation of agricultural produce, reduce transport costs, and boost productivity. This is part of our commitment to supporting local communities out of poverty through practical and sustainable interventions,”
Mr. Bataringaya noted.
He emphasized that COVOID’s mission focuses on promoting human rights, reducing poverty, fostering community empowerment, and advancing sustainable development goals through volunteer participation and capacity building. Some beneficiaries, including Bakihwahwenki Mwajuma and Kiiza Rwabikoro, expressed gratitude to COVOID for the donation, saying the bicycles would ease transport, improve market access, and promote physical fitness.
“These bicycles will help us carry goods to and from the market at no cost and strengthen our Village Saving and Loan Groups,” Mwajuma said.
