Health professionals in the Busoga region have expressed concern over a significant increase in mental health cases reported at local health facilities. Dr. Alfred Yayi, the Director of Jinja Regional Referral Hospital (JRRH), noted that mental health cases have surged over the past two years. Hospital records show more than 9,000 cases in the 2022-2023 financial year, rising to 9,400 in 2023-2024, with over 400 patients currently admitted.
Dr. Yayi commended Parliament for elevating the mental health unit to a full department, describing this move as timely. "This upgrade brings in much-needed resources and specialists, helping to manage the high patient numbers and boost mental health awareness," he said. These remarks were made during an event where BetPawa, a betting and lotteries company, donated equipment to the hospital.

Dr. Joseph Okurut, Deputy Head of the Mental Health Department at JRRH, stated that the department treats at least 800 new patients monthly, dealing with conditions such as epilepsy, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance abuse.
Dr. Okurut highlighted that alcohol and substance abuse are common among males aged 15 to 45, urging those affected to seek medical help rather than rely on traditional healers. BetPawa’s donation, valued at UGX 17.9 million, included beds, mattresses, patient clothing, and other essential items.
Despite the donation, Dr. Okurut appealed for more support, including computers, CCTV cameras, additional beds, and televisions to enhance patient care.
