Police in Rubirizi District are investigating a case involving a local businessman who claimed to have been robbed of Shs500 million by masked assailants—an allegation that has since raised serious suspicion.
According to Greater Bushenyi Regional Acting Police Spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, the suspect, identified as Kiiza Robert (38), a Mufumbira by tribe and resident of Buhera Central, Nyakasharu Ward in Rubirizi Town Council, was arrested on June 11, 2025, following inconsistencies in his statements.
Kiiza had reported that on June 9, 2025, at around 4:00 PM, he was ambushed by four unidentified masked men traveling in an omnibus vehicle (commonly referred to as a “drone”) at Nkombe Forest in Rubirizi District. He alleged that the assailants robbed him of Shs500 million, which he was transporting to Ishaka–Bushenyi, where he planned to spend the night before banking the money the following day.
However, investigators quickly noted glaring contradictions in his account, prompting his arrest for further interrogation. “We conducted a thorough search at the residences of both the suspect and a co-worker from whom he claimed to have collected waragi,” SP Tayebwa said. “During the search, we recovered Shs118,025,000, which has since been secured as part of the ongoing investigation.”
Police have not ruled out the possibility of foul play and are treating the reported robbery with a high degree of caution. “We urge members of the public to avoid transporting large sums of money without adequate security arrangements,” SP Tayebwa added.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have pledged to keep the public updated as more details emerge.
