KAMPALA - A motorist has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a traffic police officer and obstructing justice following a road incident earlier yesterday. At around 11:55 AM, a traffic officer from Jinja Road Police Station signaled a white Toyota Land Cruiser (registration number UBM 439T) to stop after it was involved in an accident. The driver, identified as Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha, reportedly ignored the officer's commands and continued driving while using her phone.

The officer eventually caught up with the vehicle at the Lugogo Traffic Lights, where Bashisha parked at the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) premises and locked her vehicle. When asked to produce her driving permit, she allegedly resorted to intimidating the officer before physically assaulting him.

In a further escalation, Bashisha is accused of confiscating the officer's EPS (Express Penalty Scheme) gadget and two of his phones.

Bashisha is now in police custody, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Police have reiterated their commitment to enforcing traffic laws and have warned motorists against obstructing officers in the line of duty.
