Thirty-seven suspected terrorists, including alleged members of the Islamic State (ISIS), have been arrested across East Africa over the past two months, according to a statement released by Interpol on Monday.
Interpol, headquartered in France, reported that the arrests were made during November and December through joint operations conducted with Afripol, the pan-African police organization.

The arrests come amid growing concerns over a potential resurgence of the ISIS militant group following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. The issue gained further attention on New Year's Day when 15 people were killed in New Orleans after a U.S. Army veteran, flying an ISIS flag from his truck, circumvented makeshift barriers and drove into a crowd.

Interpol revealed that the operations in Africa led to the arrest of 17 individuals in Kenya, including two suspected ISIS members, as well as the apprehension of a suspected ISIS Mozambique affiliate in Tanzania. Additional arrests were made in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia.
"East Africa's complex landscape, marked by political instability, porous borders, and socioeconomic challenges, continues to provide an environment conducive to terrorist activity," said Cyril Gout of Interpol.
"These positive results demonstrate the power of international collaboration in the fight against terrorism," he added.
