The universe is indifferent and irrational. Personally, I think civilization was a mistake; it was humanity’s attempt to organize what is clearly a chaotic and rebellious process—the natural universe. Human sentimentality is irrelevant to the chaotic and rebellious nature of the universe because it lacks a consistent formula—everything is constantly changing, and judging a change as good or bad is merely a human attempt to rationalize something that is beyond our comprehension.
When I visit a hospital’s cancer ward, I witness a two-year-old battling a terminal illness—how can I rationalize this? Some individuals maintain a strict diet in an attempt to stay healthy, only to unexpectedly receive a cancer diagnosis. Meanwhile, another person has been smoking for 50 years and is healthy, without any sign of lung cancer. As you can see, there is no explanation for these phenomena.
The reason I have adopted an attitude of indifference toward whatever happens to me or in society is not because I have an issue with how society is structured, but because I am simply following the evidence. And all the evidence suggests that the universe is both kind and cruel in equal measure for no particular reason—it is not up to me to pick and choose. You can’t choose life while negating death; they both go together. You can’t choose pleasure while rejecting pain; they both go together. You cannot choose light over darkness because they are inseparable. You can’t choose love while negating hate; they both go together. What evidence do you have for optimism before you judge me as a pessimist? All the evidence around us points to absurdity or pessimism.
For example, it is impossible to rationalize death—you can trick or delude yourself into believing that you will see your loved ones after death, but this belief is valid only within the context of being. Existence includes both being and non-being. Non-being refers to the state we call death, and being is the state we refer to as life. All evidence suggests the universe is indifferent and cannot be rationalized. Rationality and irrationality are both human constructs.
