Bushenyi – Thousands of women from across western Uganda are receiving free treatment for childbirth-related complications at Ishaka Adventist Hospital in Bushenyi District.
The week-long medical camp, which runs until June 7, is focused on treating women who have developed obstetric fistula and other complications resulting from prolonged or obstructed labour—conditions often linked to limited access to timely maternal healthcare.
Hospital officials say the initiative aims to restore the dignity and well-being of affected women, many of whom have silently endured these conditions due to stigma and a lack of specialized treatment.
“This camp is giving hope to women who had almost given up,” said Zadock Amanyisa, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer. “We’re not just treating a condition—we’re transforming lives.”
The beneficiaries have traveled from several districts in the western region, including Bushenyi, Sheema, Mitooma, Buhweju, Rubirizi, and Rukungiri. For many, this is their first opportunity to access professional medical care for conditions that have severely impacted their quality of life.
Obstetric fistula—a preventable condition caused by prolonged or obstructed labour—often results in chronic incontinence and social isolation. Health experts estimate that thousands of new cases occur annually in Uganda, particularly in rural communities with limited maternal health services.
The camp is part of a broader effort to improve maternal health outcomes and raise awareness about the importance of skilled birth attendance and emergency obstetric care.
