The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) has allocated additional slots to the Ankole zone for teams that will compete at this year’s edition of the Ball Games II, scheduled to kick off in Tororo on Thursday. USSSA allocates qualifying slots in various disciplines for each of the 19 zones in the country, based on the performance of teams rather than the size of the zone.

Although Ankole has the largest number of districts (13) compared to any other zone, its teams have consistently excelled, particularly in volleyball and handball, earning seven slots for boys’ volleyball and five for girls in previous editions.
However, according to a statement released by the zonal chairman, Egidio Mucunguzi, the zone has now been granted four more slots in each of the disciplines of volleyball, netball, and handball, while girls’ U16 football will retain its four slots.

“After our recently concluded USSSA-Ankole Zone Ball Games II, we sat as the Zonal Committee and wrote to our National Secretariat requesting to send more teams for this year’s national championship, mainly due to the high level of competition brewing up in our zone. The National Secretariat has today responded and granted our request,” said Mucunguzi.

The newly qualified teams, which will join those already through to the national event, have all confirmed their participation in Tororo. The zone will now send 12 boys’ and 9 girls’ volleyball teams, 8 netball teams, 6 boys’ handball teams, and 7 girls’ handball teams.
