BUSHENYI
Bushenyi District is preparing to host the national celebrations for World AIDS Day on December 1, 2025. The event, which will be presided over by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda, is scheduled to take place at the Kizinda Market Grounds in Kizinda Town Council. The national commemoration will be held under the theme: “Building a Sustainable HIV Response to End AIDS.”

Planning and Venue Confirmation
Preparations have accelerated following a high-level meeting at the district headquarters. The meeting brought together stakeholders, including the District HIV/AIDS Committee (DAC)—chaired by District Chairperson Jafari Basajabalaba—alongside a joint team from the Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC), led by Director of Partnerships Mr. Etii Tom, and representatives from the Special Forces Command (SFC). Hon. Peter Ndyahoza, the Vice Chairperson of Bushenyi, chaired the planning meeting. The selection of the Kizinda Market Grounds is strategic, as the area has been identified by the District Health Officer (DHO) as a major HIV hotspot in the district.

Addressing High Prevalence Rate
The decision to host the national event in Bushenyi comes as the district faces an HIV prevalence rate significantly higher than the national average. According to the DHO's report, Bushenyi's prevalence rate currently stands at 8%, notably higher than Uganda's national rate of 4.9% (though recent national surveys suggest the country's prevalence may be approximately 5.4%). The commemoration is expected to boost local sensitization and efforts to counter the spread of the virus in high-risk areas like Kizinda.

This focus on local action aligns with the global push to increase community-led efforts and secure sustainable domestic funding for the HIV response, especially given ongoing challenges with international funding streams.
