Mbarara High School has moved a step closer to winning the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ankole Zone Rugby 7s title after overcoming four opponents to top the first round with maximum points. The championship, staged at Ntare School grounds in Kakyeka, saw the Chaapa Bulls—as they are commonly known—defeat rivals Ntare School 31–7 in a one-sided game to complete a hat-trick of victories on the day.

Earlier, they had thrashed St. Kagwa 32–7 and newcomers Muntuyera High School Kitunga 38–0 in their opening two games.
“We are delighted to have completed the first round with maximum points, and we are going to do exactly the same in the second round to fulfill our target of winning this year’s edition of the Rugby 7s in Ankole,” said Mbarara High School coach Marvin Agaba.
This marked Kitunga’s debut in a rugby competition—an encouraging sign for the sport’s organizers in a region where rugby has remained relatively unpopular.
Led by their captain and former Mbarara High School hooker Timony Aijuka, Kitunga showed promise as a determined side ready to compete once they fully adapt to the demands of the game, which requires high levels of discipline.

“We are grateful to our administration for responding to our plea to introduce rugby at the school. Since this was our first time, we shall return home and practice what we’ve learned to improve our skills and become stronger opponents in future competitions,” said Aijuka.
The second round of the tournament will be held on June 29 at St. Kagwa Bushenyi, where the overall winner will be crowned champion. The top three teams will also qualify to represent Ankole at the national USSSA Ball Games II Rugby 7s, scheduled to take place in Tororo next month.
