Fire has gutted Basajja Market in Ishaka Division, Bushenyi–Ishaka Municipality, destroying merchandise worth millions of shillings. The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of Saturday, August 10, at around 1:00 a.m., is suspected to have started from one of the restaurants in the market. The exact cause is still under investigation by the Greater Bushenyi Police Regional Fire Prevention and Rescue Department.
According to Ishaka Division LC3 Chairperson Deus Mucenga, the fire began at kiosks opposite Kampala International University (KIU) Western Campus. He praised vendors and members of the surrounding community for working together quickly to contain the flames before they could engulf the entire market.

However, Mucenga accused the police of failing to respond promptly when they were first alerted.
The acting Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson, ASP Apollo Tayebwa, refuted the claim, saying Bushenyi District Police responded immediately upon receiving the distress call and, together with locals, battled the blaze before being reinforced by the regional fire rescue team.

Several kiosks and businesses were completely destroyed, but police say their intervention prevented the fire from spreading further.
