Kampala, — Prominent city lawyer Drake Twebaze has been remanded to prison after appearing before the Buganda Road Magistrate’s Court on multiple charges related to a high-profile fraud case involving over half a million US dollars.
Twebaze was jointly arraigned by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) on charges including Obtaining Money by False Pretenses, Conspiracy to Defraud, and Forgery.
According to the prosecution, between September and December 2022, Twebaze—acting in concert with others still at large—allegedly defrauded $553,500 from Talib Antonio McDowell, a representative of KG Unlimited LLC, a Florida-based company in the United States.
The accused is said to have misrepresented the money as a statutory compliance fee required for pre-qualification in a single-source bidding process to supply a water plant to Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries—a process that prosecutors claim did not exist.
In addition, Twebaze and his co-accused are alleged to have forged a letter, purportedly from the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority (PPDA), and sent it to KG Unlimited LLC, presenting it as an official document to bolster their claims.
The court ordered that Twebaze be remanded until June 13, 2025, when he will return for further proceedings.
This case marks another major step in the government’s continued crackdown on white-collar crime, spearheaded by joint efforts between the Anti-Corruption Unit, the ODPP, and the CID.
