Secondary schools in Sheema District have begun preparations for the upcoming Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) athletics championships, scheduled to take place in Tororo next month.
Matsyoro Vocational School is among the schools leading the charge, having organized internal athletics competitions to select a strong team of boys and girls to represent the school at the Sheema District Championships, set for this Thursday at Kabwohe Main Grounds.
Phiona Nuwasiima was outstanding having won several accolades
The school held a lively inter-house athletics contest involving three houses — Nyerere, Kenyatta, and Mandela — in a bid to scout top-performing athletes. The star of the day was Phiona Nuwasiima, a Senior Two student and promising teenage runner, who dominated the event by winning six races. Her outstanding performance helped her house, Mandela, clinch its first overall title in five years.
"I have a passion for sports, and I’m happy to have won all these accolades and helped my house achieve its first title in years," said a jubilant Nuwasiima. "I’m going to train even harder so I can perform well and earn a slot to represent Sheema District at the national championship—just like I did last year. I believe I can win something for both myself and Sheema at the national meet next month."
The school’s head teacher, Egidio Mucunguzi, said the internal competition is aimed at promoting student participation in athletics and preparing them for more competitive stages.
"We embrace the Ministry of Education and Sports’ values that promote both academics and co-curricular activities," said Mucunguzi. "This is what we’ll continue doing—preparing our students for academic excellence as well as success in sports."
Following the event, 20 athletes were selected to represent Matsyoro Vocational School at the district championship. From there, the best performers will qualify to represent Sheema District at the national athletics meet set to take place at Tororo College at the end of next month.
