Mitooma
Police in Mitooma District are searching for an unidentified man who allegedly assaulted a National Resistance Movement (NRM) registrar into a coma during local party elections on Sunday, following a disagreement. According to the district NRM registrar, Ephraim Byabakama—who declined to reveal the victim's name—all villages in Mitooma conducted successful elections except for Bukuba I Village in Kashenshero Sub-county, where the violent incident occurred. Byabakama said the matter was reported to the police for further investigation and to help apprehend the suspect.
Speaking after the elections, several Local Council I chairpersons, including Jezaho Wilson, the chairperson-elect of Rwenyangi LC1, and Byarugaba Gorden, the chairperson-elect of Karo Village in Kabira Sub-county, commended the government for organizing peaceful and orderly elections.
"We are grateful to the government for organizing a peaceful election that enabled us to freely choose our leaders," said Byarugaba. "This election demonstrates that democracy is working well at the grassroots, and we appreciate the smooth process."
However, not all participants were entirely satisfied. Eryeza Natukunda, the NRM LC1 flag bearer-elect for Mitooma Town Cell in Mitooma Town Council, expressed concern over the role of money in the elections.
"There is a need for the government to revise how to minimize the use of money in party elections," Natukunda said.
