The local athletics governing body, Uganda Athletics (UA), has cancelled the Mbarara City Marathon event that was scheduled to take place tomorrow in Mbarara City.
The cancellation comes after Uganda Athletics discovered inconsistencies among the organisers in staging a proper race in accordance with athletics rules and regulations.
Deputy Speaker Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa and Mbarara City North MP Robert Rukaari (R) take part in the run
According to a letter dated 26/03/2027, addressed to the organisers—Gaga Athletics Association Limited—and signed by Uganda Athletics General Secretary Beatrice Ayikoru, with a copy sent to the Rwizi Regional Police Commander, the organisers are accused of insisting on holding the event on Saturday (tomorrow) instead of Sunday, and of making arrangements without the guidance of the local athletics body, the Mbarara City Athletics Association.Deputy speaker Tayebwa and Mbarara North MP Rukaari Mwesigwa share a moment with Querido Antonio Luis Ferreira, the FAO Country Representative
However, when contacted, Dicken Friday Kaka, the chief organiser, said he has since engaged with Uganda Athletics and local stakeholders to see how the situation can be rectified.
Kaka added that he is working around the clock to ensure that the event takes place.
This would have been the second edition of the event, following the first edition held in March last year, during which the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, was the chief runner.
