The local football governing body, FUFA, has announced that the historic Uganda U17 men’s team, the Uganda Cubs, will receive a heroes’ welcome upon their return from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The team, which became the first-ever Ugandan side to play at a FIFA World Cup, defied all odds to reach the Round of 16. They were eliminated by fellow African side Burkina Faso, losing 4–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in normal time.
Today, FUFA confirmed that the Cubs will be received as national heroes when they arrive at Entebbe International Airport at 3:30 pm.
“We encourage all fans and stakeholders to turn out in large numbers to welcome the team today. The boys have represented the country with great honour, reaching the Round of 16 on their first attempt,” said FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein.
Hussein added that FUFA will organise a special homecoming ceremony at a later date to celebrate the team’s achievement and will invite all stakeholders who contributed to their success.
The Uganda Cubs earned their World Cup place as one of 10 African nations after a successful AFCON U17 campaign in Morocco, where they defeated The Gambia 2–1 to secure qualification.
Meanwhile, another Uganda U17 team is currently in Ethiopia taking part in the AFCON U17 CECAFA Regional Qualifiers—the first step toward qualifying for next year’s World Cup, also scheduled for Qatar.
The team in Ethiopia has won both of its Group B matches and will today face Tanzania in a group decider. The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals, with the winners and the third-placed playoff winner securing spots at the AFCON finals in Morocco and subsequently the 2026 World Cup in Qatar.
