The government has not yet concluded its inquiry into the continued closure of Nation Media Group (NMG) operations in Uganda despite the completion of the company's ownership transition, ICT and National Guidance Minister Justine Kasule Lumumba has said.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday, Lumumba said investigations are still ongoing and urged the public to wait for the government's official position.
"We are still inquiring, and after the inquiry, we will respond," the minister said.
Her remarks indicate that the government's review extends beyond the change in ownership and continues to focus on issues surrounding the suspension of the media group's operations.
The closure has left the Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM, and Dembe FM off air and out of print for nearly two weeks, affecting more than 700 employees and disrupting one of Uganda's largest private media organisations.
The ownership of Nation Media Group's majority stake has since changed hands following the acquisition of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development's shares by new investors. However, the completion of the transaction has not resulted in the immediate reopening of the company's Ugandan operations.
Officials have not disclosed when the inquiry is expected to conclude or what specific issues remain under investigation. The Uganda Communications Commission has also maintained that it will await the outcome of the government's inquiry before determining whether any regulatory action is required.
The continued shutdown has sparked debate over the future of independent media, regulatory oversight, and investment in Uganda's communications sector, with industry observers awaiting the government's final decision on the company's return to operations.
