The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Sheema District, Sam Orikunda, has cautioned residents against obtaining loans from money lenders, warning that many risk losing their property when they fail to repay.
While addressing residents of Kasana Town Council in Sheema South during the launch of the Kyamuhunga Jubilee SACCO Kasana Branch, Orikunda advised the public to instead save and borrow from SACCOs, which he said are safer and better regulated.
“Do not be tempted by quick loans from money lenders,” Orikunda said. “Many people have lost land, houses, and livestock because of high interest rates. Save with SACCOs where your money is secure and borrow responsibly.”

The launch event included a free medical camp, a clean-up of Kasana Trading Centre, and the distribution of waste bins to promote hygiene. Orikunda reminded residents that the primary mandate of financial institutions is to safeguard people’s money and urged borrowers to use loans productively to improve their livelihoods.

The Sheema District Commercial Officer, Asasira Winston Kafurembe, said Sheema District has the highest number of cooperatives in the region.
“Sheema leads in the number of cooperatives, which shows our commitment to working together as a community,” he said. “We shall protect SACCOs from loan defaulters and protect residents from any form of harassment by financial institutions.”

The General Manager of Kyamuhunga Jubilee SACCO, Pamela Ntwirenabo, who led the cleaning exercise in Kasana Town, thanked residents for their cooperation.
“Our SACCO is not only about savings and loans. We believe in giving back to the community,” she said. “Through our outreaches, we offer free medical treatment and other services as part of our effort to promote development and fight poverty.”
Ntwirenabo noted that the SACCO will continue extending similar community services to other areas within Greater Bushenyi.
