Police in Kisoro District have launched a manhunt for suspects who allegedly murdered a 43-year-old woman identified as Sylvia Nyirandagije, a resident of Masaka Village, Nyakabingo Parish, Chahi Sub-county.
Nyirandagije reportedly went missing on December 15, 2025, and her whereabouts remained unknown until December 17, 2025, when her body was discovered dumped in a hole in Bihanga Village, Nyakabingo Parish.
The body was discovered by a passerby who had stopped by the roadside to answer a phone call along the road connecting Iryaruhuri Trading Centre to Kisoro Town.
The passerby alerted local leaders, including the Bihanga Village Chairperson, Mr Jackson Nteziyaremye, and the LC1 Chairperson of Masaka Village, Mr William Habyara.
Confirming the incident, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr Elly Maate, said police officers visited and documented the crime scene before retrieving the body.
“The scene was visited and documented by police. The body was later retrieved and conveyed to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination,” Maate said.
He added that preliminary observations revealed the deceased had visible injuries and a piece of cloth tied around her neck, raising suspicion of foul play. “The body had injuries, and there was a piece of cloth tied around the neck, which indicates that the deceased may have been murdered,” Maate noted.
Police further revealed that no formal missing person report had been filed by the deceased’s relatives prior to the discovery of her body. “We appeal to the public to provide any information that may help police identify and arrest the suspects involved in this heinous crime,” Maate said.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
