Former Miss Uganda 2023/2024, Hannah Kalema Tumukunde, has made a successful return to student politics after winning the Guild Representative Council (GRC) by-election for Mary Stuart Hall at Makerere University.
Kalema's victory comes months after she unsuccessfully contested for the 92nd Guild Presidency as an independent candidate, losing to Gracious Kandondi, who contested on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.

Her latest political breakthrough follows the resignation of the former Mary Stuart Hall Guild Representative Council member, Jemimah Nalumansi, who stepped down from the position.
In her resignation letter, Nalumansi said she had sought office to actively represent students rather than merely occupy the position.

"I did not run for GRC to warm a seat. I ran to represent students and to debate issues affecting students of Mary Stuart Hall," she stated.

The resignation created a vacancy, paving the way for a by-election in which Kalema emerged as one of five female candidates vying to represent the hall.
The election, held on June 23, 2026, attracted contestants from different colleges within the university.
Kalema secured a decisive victory after polling 330 votes, representing 68.5 percent of the total votes cast.
Speaking shortly after being declared the winner, Kalema thanked the students of Mary Stuart Hall for entrusting her with the mandate to represent them.

"I promise to be the change they need," she said while expressing appreciation to the Mary Stuart Hall community for its overwhelming support.

Kalema said she is committed to championing the interests of female students, strengthening student representation, and ensuring that the concerns affecting residents of Mary Stuart Hall are effectively addressed through the Guild Representative Council.

Her victory marks a significant political comeback following her Guild presidential defeat and positions her among the influential student leaders in Makerere University's 92nd Guild administration.
