UPDF suspends military cooperation with Germany over ambassador’s conduct

Statement from UPDF

Kampala — The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced the immediate suspension of all ongoing defence and military cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany.
In a statement released on Monday, May 26, 2025, the UPDF said the decision follows credible intelligence indicating that the current German Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Matthias Schauer, is allegedly involved in subversive activities within the country.
“The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces has suspended all forms of military and defence cooperation with the Federal Republic of Germany with immediate effect,” the statement read. “This follows credible intelligence reports linking the German Ambassador to subversive engagements with hostile pseudo-political and military groups operating against the government of Uganda.”

According to the UPDF, the suspension will remain in effect until the matter is fully resolved and the alleged involvement of Ambassador Schauer is addressed through the appropriate diplomatic and security channels.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to issue an official communication in line with Uganda’s diplomatic protocols.
As of now, the German Embassy in Kampala has not issued a public response regarding the allegations or the suspension of cooperation.

Military cooperation between Uganda and Germany has in the past included training programmes, joint exercises, and logistical support under broader international security frameworks. The development marks a significant shift in diplomatic and defence relations between the two nations.
