Ntungamo, Edison Ngirabakunzi, the Country Representative of the Norwegian Association of Disabled (NAD), has urged Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to embrace innovation and actively participate in the socio-economic aspects of society. Speaking during the launch of a five-year initiative aimed at strengthening the rights and inclusion of PWDs, held at Embassy Tours Hotel in Ntungamo Municipality on Tuesday, Ngirabakunzi introduced the initiative as the Collection of Actions for Disability Rights, Human Rights, and Organizational Development (CADIRHROD).
Gerald Niwagaba speaking
Ngirabakunzi commended the government's deliberate steps to support PWDs and emphasized the need for them to shift focus towards innovation and active engagement. “PWDs must fight for their space by engaging in the same opportunities and platforms as the able-bodied,” he said.
John Ninsima, Programs Director at the National Union of Persons with Disabilities in Uganda (NUDIPU), noted that increased community awareness has eased efforts to end discrimination. “The tide is changing, and people are becoming more inclusive,” he said.
Deputy RDC Speaking
Ntungamo Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Rosemary Atuhaire, reiterated the government’s support for PWDs and warned against mistreatment. She also urged PWDs to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the government.
Gerald Niwagaba, representing the Chief Administrative Officer, encouraged PWDs to avoid idleness and wishful thinking and instead focus on progressive development.
The CADIRHROD program aims to build on this momentum by fostering innovation, strengthening advocacy, and enhancing livelihoods for persons with disabilities across Uganda.
