Police patrol officers on Monday morning foiled an armed robbery in Ssemwogerere Zone, Nakawa Division, Kampala District, recovering a rifle and suspected stolen property after engaging a group of armed robbers.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, ASP Rachael Kawala, the incident occurred in the early hours of June 23, 2026, at around 12:50 a.m.
Preliminary police findings indicate that a businessman and his wife were walking along Mukasa Road when they were intercepted by three armed men.
The suspects reportedly ordered the couple to stop and lie down, a command they obeyed before the robbers stole the man's mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint.
As the suspects turned to demand the woman's mobile phone, police officers conducting routine motorcycle patrols in the area arrived at the scene.
"Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects fled, abandoning a bag containing suspected stolen property and a rifle," ASP Kawala said.
Police officers immediately pursued the fleeing suspects, leading to an exchange during which one unidentified male suspect, believed to be about 25 years old, was shot and killed.
The other suspects managed to escape, and police have launched a manhunt to track them down.
The recovered rifle and the abandoned bag containing suspected stolen property have been taken into police custody as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations.
Police have commended the swift response of the patrol officers, noting that the intervention prevented what could have escalated into a more serious crime.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, while the identity of the deceased suspect is yet to be established.
