Masaka SS and Kijjabwemi SS are the new boys' and girls' rugby 15s champions for the Western Schools Masaka Zone Championship after overcoming their opponents in the final round of games played over the weekend in Masaka.
Playing against three other opponents, Masaka SS recorded straight wins, including a 28-15 victory over rivals St. Jude SS in their final match, to finish top with 14 points. On the same day, Kijjabwemi SS defeated Kabukunge MS 17-14 to secure second place with 8 points.
St. Jude SS and Kabukunge MS finished third and fourth respectively and will have to apply for consideration to participate in this year’s edition of the USSSA National Schools Ball Games I, scheduled to take place in Bukedea next month.
Top finishers Masaka SS and Kijjabwemi SS automatically qualified to represent the zone at the national games in Bukedea.
In the girls' category, Kijjabwemi SS dominated St. Jude SS with a double victory in a two-team competition, even in the absence of Proscovia Mukyala, who is currently on duty with the national Lady Rugby Cranes team at the Africa Women’s Division I Championship in San Pedro, Ivory Coast.
Kijjabwemi SS won the first round 66-0 and sealed their dominance with a 41-7 win in the second round to emerge top of the zone. Both teams qualified for the national competition.
“We are happy that schools continue to embrace the sport, and we will keep encouraging more in the region to join,” said Uganda Rugby Union (URU) Development Officer for Western Uganda, Timothy Iraka.
Uganda Schools Rugby Association (USRA) representative Richard Wati, who also serves at London College, handed the trophies to the winning schools.
The USSSA Ball Games I is a national schools sports championship featuring disciplines such as girls’ football, rugby 15s, hockey, basketball, and racket games (badminton, table tennis, and tennis). This year’s edition will be hosted at Bukedea Comprehensive School from May 5 to 13.
