Mbarara City will be represented by five teams at this year's edition of the Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association (UPSSA) National Ball Games, scheduled for August 25 to September 3 at Pioneer Primary School in Soroti City. The teams were confirmed during the Mbarara City primary schools ball games competition held at Kakyeka Stadium on Thursday. According to Mbarara City sports officer Cleophas Musinguzi, the selected teams include the U12 boys football team, U14 boys and girls netball teams, and U14 boys and girls volleyball teams.

"We have decided to take these five teams, and we are hopeful that they will put up a good show at the national games. This will be our second time competing at the national level, and since we had a good debut, we are confident of a strong performance this time," said Musinguzi.
The championship, from which the outstanding athletes were selected to represent the city at the national level, featured select teams from the six Mbarara City wards: Kakoba, Kakiika, Nyamitanga, Kamukuzi, Biharwe, and Nyakayojo. These teams competed in U14 and U12 categories in netball, volleyball, and football.

Mbarara City Mayor Robert Kakyebezi, who witnessed much of the young talent on display before presiding over the closing and awarding ceremony, pledged to increase the sports budget.

"I am happy to witness the young talents that our city is blessed with, and I promise full support to the team going to Soroti so they can represent the city at the national level. I will also ensure that local sports are strongly funded in the next financial year," Kakyebezi said.

Kakiika emerged as the overall winner after collecting four of the available eight titles, with victories in U12 boys football, U12 boys netball, and both U12 and U14 boys volleyball. Kamukuzi came in second, winning U14 boys football and U12 and U14 girls netball, while Nyamitanga won the U14 girls volleyball title. Nyakayojo, Kakoba, and Biharwe did not secure a podium finish.
