For years, football fans have celebrated stories of players who rise from poverty to global stardom. The “boy from the streets” narrative has become one of football’s most familiar success stories.
But the journey of Gabriel Martinelli tells a different story — one built not only on talent, but also on sacrifice, persistence, family support, and relentless belief.

Born in 2001 in Guarulhos, Brazil, Martinelli’s football journey was shaped early by a father who believed his son could achieve something extraordinary.
Unlike many young players whose careers are defined solely by financial hardship, Martinelli’s rise was fuelled by parents willing to invest heavily — emotionally, financially, and personally — in pursuit of a dream.

His father repeatedly moved him from one football opportunity to another, taking him through multiple trials in Brazil and Europe while absorbing the costs, uncertainty, and emotional strain that come with chasing professional football opportunities. The process was far from easy.

Long before becoming one of the Premier League’s most recognisable forwards, Martinelli reportedly underwent multiple trials at Manchester United, training alongside elite talents and interacting with stars including Zlatan Ibrahimović, Paul Pogba, and Wayne Rooney.

Despite these opportunities, Manchester United never signed him. Repeated rejection could easily have ended the dream. For many families, the financial burden, uncertainty, and emotional pressure would have been enough reason to stop. But Martinelli’s family continued believing. That persistence eventually produced an opportunity when Arsenal decided to take a chance on the young Brazilian. The decision changed everything.

Since arriving in England, Martinelli has developed into one of Arsenal’s key players and has now earned recognition at the highest level, including a call-up to represent Brazil at this year’s FIFA World Cup.

Yet for many observers, one recent moment captured the deeper meaning behind his journey.
Following Arsenal’s Premier League triumph, Martinelli celebrated alongside his father before placing his winner’s medal around his neck and embracing him tightly — a moment many supporters described as emotional and symbolic. For some, the image represented something larger than football itself.

It highlighted the unseen sacrifices behind success — the parents who continue believing during difficult periods, the families who absorb repeated disappointment, and the people who keep dreams alive long before the world notices. Martinelli’s story challenges the assumption that every success story follows the same path. Sometimes success comes through poverty. Sometimes through privilege.
And sometimes, success comes from good parenting, sacrifice, discipline, belief, and refusing to quit after repeated rejection. Behind many successful athletes are people who carried the dream long before the trophies arrived.
