Joseph Tamale Mirundi: A Legacy of outspoken journalism and political analysis

Political commentator and former Presidential Press Secretary, Tamale Mirundi, has passed away. He died from lung-related complications on Tuesday at around 11:40 PM at Kisubi Hospital in Kampala, according to his family.
Joseph Tamale Mirundi was a prominent Ugandan journalist, author, and political analyst known for his fiery and unfiltered commentary on Ugandan politics. Throughout his career, Mirundi became a familiar face on various television stations, including NBS and STV, and was a regular voice on radio and social media platforms. His sharp insights and bold opinions made him a fixture in the political discourse of Uganda.

His Career

Mirundi’s journey in journalism began as a part-time writer for the newspaper Munno before he transitioned into professional journalism. His rise to prominence came with his appearance on NBS Television's One on One, a show that allowed him to showcase his analytical prowess. However, his tenure on the show was not without controversy; in 2017, he was suspended for using abusive language on air. Despite this setback, Mirundi's influence only grew, and he was rewarded by President Yoweri Museveni with a new car for his contributions to media.

In 2021, Mirundi moved to STV Uganda, where he hosted The Sharp Talk and Embuga, shows that further cemented his reputation as a fearless commentator. He was known for his predictions and insights, including his foresight into the political dynamics surrounding the People Power movement led by Bobi Wine.

Mirundi's career was also marked by personal and legal challenges. His first wife, Juliet Nassimbwa, sought a divorce in 2015 due to political differences, and in 2019, Mirundi claimed he had been poisoned. He was also embroiled in legal battles, including a defamation case brought against him by lawyer Mabirizi.

In 2020, after ending his appearances on One on One at NBS Television, Mirundi continued to engage with his audience through social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube, where his shows remained popular.

Mirundi's life was cut short when he succumbed to lung-related illnesses after a month-long hospitalization at Kisubi Hospital in Kampala. Mirundi’s legacy will be remembered for his relentless pursuit of truth and his unwavering commitment to speaking his mind, regardless of the consequences.
