Rubirizi
Men in Rubirizi District have been strongly encouraged to embrace modern contraception methods, including vasectomy, as a way to promote responsible family planning, manage population growth, and improve overall family well-being. The call was made by Mr. Douglas Rwamutojo, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Rubirizi, during a men’s dialogue meeting organized by ACODEV Uganda in partnership with the Rubirizi District Local Government at the Mayor’s Gardens in Nyakasharu.
Contraception as Economic Empowerment
Mr. Rwamutojo emphasized that adopting contraception is directly linked to sustainable livelihoods and economic empowerment. He noted that family planning promotes healthy family dynamics and effective birth control, highlighting the crucial role of education in raising community awareness.
“Contraception helps men and women make informed reproductive health decisions, leading to stronger families and healthier communities because it prevents unintended pregnancies and can reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections,” said ACODEV Project Coordinator Mr. Chris Ategeka and the NRM LC5 flag bearer for Rubirizi District, Hon. Agaba Obed Byakureka.
Both leaders stressed the importance of involving men—who are often primary decision-makers—in family planning to promote social cohesion and healthier family relationships.
Responsible Fatherhood
The initiative was welcomed by participants, including Mr. Rukizakale James, Head Teacher of St. Michael High School, who encouraged men to embrace family planning for the good of their families and communities.
Mr. Rukizakale highlighted the positive impact of family planning methods on household well-being and population management. He urged men to take an active role in their families’ health by accompanying their wives to antenatal checkups, saying this promotes responsible fatherhood and ensures children grow up in a supportive environment.
