A fire outbreak in Sunrise Hotel building has claimed two lives as rescue teams battle dense smoke to access all affected areas, authorities have confirmed.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango, emergency responders remain on the scene, working tirelessly to assess the extent of the damage and rescue any remaining individuals. However, heavy smoke is significantly obstructing visibility, making the operation more challenging.
"Rescue teams remain on the scene, working to access all rooms and confirm the extent of the damage. However, their efforts are being hindered by dense smoke, which is severely limiting visibility," Onyango stated.
Despite the difficult conditions, emergency responders have managed to access some rooms and recover victims. Tragically, the death toll has now risen to two.
The first victim has been identified as Akot Akol Arop Chan, a South Sudanese national. Authorities have transferred the body to the City Mortuary at Mulago Hospital for an autopsy.
The second victim has yet to be identified. Efforts to retrieve more individuals and determine the full impact of the fire are still ongoing.
Police have assured the public that further updates will be provided as the situation develops. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are underway.
