Virika Cathedral, a historic Catholic landmark perched atop a hill in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, is in urgent need of extensive renovations. This iconic structure, central to the Catholic community in the Toro region, faces significant structural challenges due to years of wear and the impact of past earthquakes.
A call for action
Msgr. Isaiah Mayombo, Vicar General of Fort Portal Diocese and chairman of the renovation project steering committee, revealed that the project requires sh1.6 billion to complete. Speaking at a fundraising dinner held on Friday at Kabira Country Club in Kampala, he emphasized the critical need for financial support to restore the cathedral to its former glory.
“The original budget in 2021 was sh2 billion, but inflation and unforeseen circumstances escalated the cost to sh3.6 billion. With sh2 billion already raised, we now need sh1.6 billion to finish the work,” Msgr. Mayombo explained. The cathedral, which can accommodate 2,000 congregants, is not only a place of worship but also a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from Uganda and beyond.
A rich heritage
Known officially as Our Lady of the Snows, the cathedral’s name pays homage to the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains. This title was inspired by Fr. Auguste Achte, one of the first Catholic missionaries to Western Uganda, who arrived at Kiryantaama Hill in 1895 and named the mission after the Blessed Virgin Mary, referencing the Rutooro word for snow, Birika, which he adapted to Virika.
The original cathedral, constructed in 1908, was destroyed by an earthquake in 1966, prompting the construction of a more robust, earthquake-resistant structure between 1967 and 1968. Over the years, the cathedral has undergone three major renovations—in 1987, 2003, and most recently in 2023—but persistent roof leakage continues to plague the building.
“This time, the aim is to not only repair the damage but to address the root cause of the leakage, ensuring a long-term solution,” said Bishop Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki, who initiated the comprehensive renovation project in 2021 after the roof’s condition became critical in 2019.
Community support and contributions
Vice President Jesca Alupo, represented by Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua, hailed the local community’s effort to independently raise funds for the renovation, a departure from past reliance on foreign donations.
“This is a testament to growth and self-reliance. I commend the bishop and the people of Fort Portal for their commitment to preserving this spiritual and cultural heritage,” she said, contributing sh20 million to the cause.
Dr. Patrick Birungi, a member of the renovation steering committee, urged continued support from all stakeholders, emphasizing that the project is not just about restoring a building but preserving a symbol of faith and unity for future generations.
A symbol of resilience
Virika Cathedral stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of the Catholic community in Western Uganda. As efforts to secure the remaining funds intensify, Msgr. Mayombo expressed optimism that the diocese, with the support of well-wishers and partners, will successfully complete the restoration, safeguarding this historic landmark for generations to come.
