Addressing the graduates, Bamunoba described the K9 unit as a critical force multiplier in modern policing, noting that sniffer dogs have played a key role in solving numerous crimes.
“These dogs are doing a great job in supporting investigations and enhancing our operational capacity,” he said.

He urged the officers to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the training to improve service delivery and strengthen the fight against crime in their respective areas of deployment.

Bamunoba also encouraged the graduates to build expertise in canine handling as a professional career path within the police force.
“You should treat this as a specialised career that can propel you to higher levels within the institution,” he said.

He emphasised discipline, patriotism, and respect for institutional systems, cautioning the officers against alcoholism, drug abuse, and irresponsible behaviour.

Meanwhile, the Commandant of the K9 Unit, CP Dr Mugume Martin, said the officers had undergone intensive training covering a wide range of skills essential for modern policing.
“These officers have been equipped with skills in explosive detection, human tracking, basic veterinary care, scent discrimination, suspect identification, and crime scene management,” he said.

He added that the training also focused on obstacle and agility drills, as well as integrating canine units into criminal investigations.

Dr Mugume expressed confidence that the graduates would significantly boost the effectiveness of the K9 unit in crime detection and prevention.
