KAMPALA
Democratic Party (DP) President General and Laroo-Pece Division Member of Parliament, Hon. Norbert Mao, has defended his bid for the Speakership, arguing that the race should not be determined by political party affiliation but rather by competence and the ability to restore public trust in Parliament.
Speaking on his candidacy, Mao emphasized that the position of Speaker requires leadership that transcends partisan politics, insisting that Parliament must be guided by individuals capable of strengthening institutional integrity and credibility.
He noted that the ongoing debate around the Speakership has increasingly been framed along party lines, a trend he says undermines the broader goal of selecting the most suitable leader for the legislature.
“The contest should not be reduced to which party one belongs to, but who is best positioned to restore public confidence in Parliament,” Mao said, underscoring his message of institutional reform and neutrality in leadership selection.
The DP leader’s remarks come amid heightened political interest in the Speakership race, with various political actors positioning themselves ahead of the contest, which is expected to attract strong competition from within and outside the ruling establishment.
Mao, who also serves as a senior figure in the Democratic Party (Uganda), has in recent weeks increasingly framed his campaign around governance reforms, parliamentary independence, and accountability in leadership.
Observers note that his entry into the race adds a new dynamic to the contest, particularly given his dual role as a party leader and legislator, as well as his longstanding involvement in Uganda’s political opposition landscape.
