St Kagwa Bushenyi High School may further stamp its authority as the top schools football side in Ankole after gaining an advantage over the rest by completing a partnership with the local football governing body, FUFA.
The eight-time Bushenyi District secondary schools football champions have officially been named the FUFA School of Excellence for the entire Western Region, a development expected to give young talents at the school greater exposure in the game.

St Kagwa, which recently became the first team to successfully defend the USSSA boys’ football title at the concluded USSSA Ankole Zone Championship in Ibanda, is expected to use this opportunity to strengthen its dominance.

The FUFA Schools of Excellence are accredited secondary schools partnering with the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) to combine elite football training with academic education for student-athletes aged 13 to 16 years.

The programme is part of the FUFA Technical Master Plan (FTMP) and FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS). These schools act as regional training centres to nurture young talent and strengthen local football development pathways.

Under the partnership, FUFA provides technical staff, training kits and equipment, while the selected schools provide facilities, scholarships and bursaries for talented players.

The programme covers all eight FUFA regions, with each region providing one boys’ school, while four girls’ schools are selected from combined regions to ensure nationwide talent identification.

FUFA’s objective is to create a structured environment that develops elite players who can progress to the National Football Academy and national teams.

St Kagwa now joins other selected boys’ schools including Jinja SSS, Kibuli SS, St Joseph’s College Layibi, St Charles Lwanga Koboko, Standard High School Ndejje Campus and Bukedea Comprehensive School.

The selected girls’ schools are Bishop Comboni College Kambuga, Amus College School, Hopeful Future Secondary School and Wisdom High School Akalo.

The Bushenyi giants will also be among the eight venues across the country for the first-ever FUFA Talent Identification Clinics for Under-13, Under-14, Under-15 and Under-16 players scheduled for May 30 to 31.
