Ever since the current leadership of the local football governing body, FUFA, took charge at Mengo 13 years ago, the message to retiring and retired internationals has been clear: they remain vital to the game not only on the pitch but also in various off-pitch roles. Many heeded this call and enrolled in programs organized by FUFA to qualify as team managers, financial controllers, coaches, referees, chief administrative officers (CEOs), team doctors, and administrators, among others.
FUFA has since gone on to set minimum standards for clubs in both the top flight and the second-tier FUFA Big League. Today, for example, the minimum requirement for technical staff on the bench is a CAF B coaching certificate. This has pushed former football stars, who once entertained fans on the pitch, to pursue coaching and administrative qualifications to continue serving the beautiful game.

On September 26, 2025, another milestone was reached as several retired internationals completed the third module of the CAF B coaching course at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru. The course, which began in June, is facilitated by CAF instructors Douglas Bamweyana, Jackson Nyima, and Livingstone Kyabadde.

Among the notable participants are former Uganda Cranes stars Habibu Kavuma, Peter Sserumaga, Brian Umony, Sadam Juma, and Godfrey Walusimbi. Also attending are Mbarara City assistant coach and former Western region striker Zaidi Byekwaso, as well as Kigezi Home Boyz’ Aggrey Madoi.
The CAF B course consists of four modules. With the third module concluded today, participants will return next week for the final module and examinations, after which successful candidates will receive the CAF B coaching certificate—the second-highest coaching qualification under CAF standards.
