Rubirizi – Nominated candidates for Member of Parliament (MP) and LC V positions in Rubirizi District have been issued a stern warning against engaging in illegal practices, including tribalism and voter bribery, as the 2026 general elections approach.
The caution was delivered today by the Rubirizi District Returning Officer, Mr. Twinomujuni Nickolas, during an Electoral Commission (EC) and security harmonization meeting held at the district headquarters.

Call for discipline and compliance
Mr. Nickolas urged all candidates to exhibit discipline, respect, and proper time management throughout the campaign period. He emphasized the necessity for both candidates and voters to strictly follow electoral rules to ensure the process remains peaceful, transparent, and democratic. He added that any individual who violates the EC and security guidelines faces the risk of immediate disqualification. Lillian Kikobye, the Rubirizi District Police Commander (DPC), assured the candidates that security forces would maintain a strong, non-partisan presence to guarantee an orderly and peaceful election process. She specifically requested candidates to treat security officers respectfully and cautioned security personnel against taking sides in the political contest.

Candidates welcome harmonization effort
Candidates in attendance appreciated the pre-campaign meeting, acknowledging its potential to curb violence and facilitate a smooth voting process. Hon. Cadet Benjamin Buturo, a contestant for the Bunyaruguru MP seat, encouraged unity among his peers and supporters, stressing the importance of respectful language, responsible social media use, and justice throughout the campaigns.

Meanwhile, Hon. Haji Muhamadi Katoto Kato, the NRM flag bearer for the Katerera Constituency, described the meeting as successful and urged fellow candidates to respect established campaign schedules. He strongly discouraged inciting violence among voters, reminding all participants that they will still need each other beyond politics, and those who break the law will face police action.
