MBARARA CITY

The Minister of Local Government, Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, has launched a tour of the Ankole Sub-region aimed at strengthening accountability and combating corruption in local governments.
The minister kicked off the exercise in Mbarara City, where he held a meeting with political and technical leaders to assess governance challenges and the state of service delivery.

Addressing the meeting, Barugahara said the tour is intended to reinforce transparency and accountability in local governments. He stressed that it should not be viewed as an effort to target or intimidate local leaders.
He said the government’s focus is on eliminating corruption and ensuring that public resources are managed responsibly for the benefit of citizens.

During the meeting, Mbarara City Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi raised concern over the persistent misunderstandings among members of the city’s technical leadership, particularly between the City Clerk and the Chief Finance Officer. He warned that the strained working relationship has negatively affected the efficient delivery of public services and appealed for government intervention to restore harmony within the administration.

Mbarara Woman Member of Parliament Charity Kibaju Kamuhanda urged both political and technical leaders to put aside their differences and embrace teamwork in the interest of the city’s development. She said effective cooperation among leaders is critical to improving service delivery and advancing government programmes.

The minister’s visit marks the beginning of a wider regional tour expected to cover several local governments across the Ankole Sub-region as part of the Ministry of Local Government’s efforts to promote good governance, accountability and improved public service delivery.
