Doctors at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital have performed a life-saving eight-hour surgery to remove approximately 50 sewing needles and pieces of broken pens from the abdomen of a nine-year-old boy who was allegedly forced to swallow them by his stepmother.
The young victim, identified as Samuel Akamumpa, underwent a complex operation after the foreign objects caused severe internal complications.
According to Dr. Deus Twesigye, the medical team spent nearly eight hours carefully extracting the dangerous items — 50 needles and multiple fragments of broken pens — from the boy’s stomach and intestines.
Photos released by the hospital show a disturbing collection of needles and plastic pen pieces laid out after the successful surgery.
Samuel, who hails from Mitooma District, was allegedly subjected to repeated torture by his stepmother, Juliet Tushabeomwe, over several months. Police say the 45-year-old woman forced the boy to swallow the objects, often mixed with porridge, while threatening him.

Tushabeomwe was arrested and has since been remanded to prison on charges of aggravated torture and attempted murder. She is due to appear in court again in June.
The boy is currently recovering in the paediatric ward at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where he continues to receive specialised care.
This shocking case has sparked widespread outrage across Uganda, with many calling for swift justice and stronger child protection measures. Child rights activists have described the incident as one of the most extreme cases of child abuse recorded in recent years.
The hospital management praised the surgical team for their precision and dedication during the delicate procedure.
