KAMPALA

Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested a 36-year-old man for alleged unlawful possession of suspected government stores following an intelligence-led operation in Kawempe Division.
The suspect, Prosper Turinawe, a driver attached to a private security company and a resident of Kyebando Central, was arrested on June 21, 2026, after police received information that a man had been seen carrying a pistol along Mawanda Road.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, officers from Wandegeya Police Station launched an operation and established that the suspect had been staying at a lodge in the area.
Police said Turinawe initially evaded arrest when officers attempted to apprehend him. However, further intelligence led to his interception at around 6:00 a.m., during which he was allegedly found in possession of 13 rounds of ammunition suspected to be government stores.

Investigators are now working to establish the origin of the ammunition, how it came into the suspect’s possession, and whether other individuals may be connected to the case.
The arrest comes amid ongoing security operations aimed at combating the illegal possession and circulation of firearms and military-related equipment among civilians.
Turinawe remains in police custody as investigations continue. Police have urged the public to continue providing information that can assist law enforcement agencies in preventing crime and strengthening public safety.
