Gulu
The national Uganda Secondary Schools ball games II climaxed on Thursday at Sacred Heart S.S. in Gulu, with a few of the many schools from across the country returning home with accolades.
The ten-day championship, the largest USSSA had ever hosted since its inception in 2010, attracted 10,186 athletes from over 500 elite schools across the 19 zones in the country.
By the close of the championship, which had 23 disciplines being competed for, only a few successful school teams went back home with trophies and medals.
Among them were surprise debutantes Kashaka Girls Mbarara, who defied all odds to win the girls' Ludo gold, having beaten a host of other challengers that turned up for the competition.

Led by eventual Most Valuable Player (MVP) Diaz Arikiriza, teaming up with Comfort Ayebazibwe, Queen Umurerwa, Sherine Ayebare, Samalie Purity Natukunda, and Rosette Natukunda, the Mbarara side did not disappoint as they led the charts with a difference of 8 points.
It was their first ever national accolade of any kind, and will live in the minds of the Kashaka Girls community as the first ever successful side in the history of the school.
In the same way, Ntare School, which had fielded the most number of teams together with Mbarara High, collected accolades too, with the most appealing and challenging dancesport team winning gold over the rest of the high-profile competitors, adding to a silver in scrabble.
Mbarara High had fielded the same number of teams (8) and also managed to record a silver in both rugby 7s and woodball.
