Luwero - Police are holding two suspects in connection with the theft of 23 tons of cocoa, valued at millions of shillings, which was allegedly diverted and offloaded at a residence in Luwero district.
According to a statement released on January 6, 2025, the Territorial Police in Luwero CPS, Savannah Region, launched investigations into the suspected theft. The cocoa, transported in a blue box-body truck, reportedly left Bundibugyo district on January 4, 2025, but was diverted upon arrival in Luwero on January 6 at around 6:00 a.m.
Police say the cargo was offloaded at the residence of Bisaso Eric, a 44-year-old businessman, in Mabale Zone, Kiwogozi Ward, Luwero Town Council. It is alleged that Bisaso had made arrangements to receive and purchase the stolen cocoa.
Further inquiries revealed that Bisaso enlisted the help of Katongole Jackson, a 42-year-old loader and resident of Kalongo Miti in Luwero Town Council, to assist in offloading the 177 bags of cocoa.
The stolen cocoa has since been recovered and is being held as an exhibit at Luwero CPS. Meanwhile, the two suspects, Bisaso and Katongole, remain in custody to aid the ongoing investigation.
Police are working to establish the motive behind the theft and the involvement of other individuals in the diversion of the cocoa from its intended destination. Authorities have urged transporters to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
