The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Uganda, in partnership with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) Canada, has launched the Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas (CAPA) Initiative in Rubirizi and Kasese Districts. The initiative aims to support communities in protecting and conserving wildlife, combating climate change, and managing natural resources, including Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake George, Lake Edward, Kasyoha-Kitomi Forest Reserve, Karinju Forest, and other surrounding natural resources in the two districts.
During a stakeholder engagement meeting held on February 18, 2025, at Kyarumba Catholic Parish in Kyarumba Town Council, Kasese District, WWF Uganda handed over funds to three women’s groups in Rubirizi and Kasese. The benefiting groups include Kyankwanzi Bakyara Tukorere Hamwe Bika Oguzee from Kicwamba Sub-County, Rubirizi, which received UGX 106 million; Nyambuko Development Group from Kasese, which received UGX 97 million; and Bwitho Men and Women Group, also from Kasese, which received UGX 97 million.
According to Paul Hatanga, WWF Uganda’s Project Coordinator, the funding aims to strengthen community resilience to the effects of climate change. "The World Wide Fund for Nature in Uganda is committed to supporting successful groups and vulnerable communities that have demonstrated potential in protecting the environment," Hatanga said.
WWF Uganda’s Communications Officer, Mr. Happy Ali, confirmed that the organization’s strategic plan focuses on protecting biodiversity, reducing the human footprint, and promoting sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.
"The World Wide Fund for Nature in Uganda aims to stop the degradation of the planet's natural environment and build a future where humans live in harmony with nature," said Ali.
The Chairperson of Kyankwanzi Bakyara Tukorere Hamwe Group, Madam Asimwe Monica, expressed gratitude to WWF Uganda for the support, stating that the funding will help their group expand their business and marketing activities. Mr. Mulongo Esau, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Rubirizi, appreciated WWF Uganda for supporting the communities, noting that this assistance will help them escape poverty.
He further advised the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely and ensure the sustainable management of natural resources for future generations.
