Police in Sheema District are holding a 56-year-old woman accused of assaulting her grandson to death for allegedly stealing fourteen thousand shillings.
The Greater Bushenyi region police spokesperson, Martial Tumusiime, on December 2nd, identified the suspect as Medrine Kyomugisha, 56, a resident of Rwamurongora Cell, Karera North Ward, Kashozi Division in Sheema Municipality, and the deceased as Henrick Abaho, aged 9.
The deceased was a Primary One pupil at Nyakashambya Primary School in Sheema Municipality.

According to Yorokamu Tibanyendera, the Rwamurongora LC 1 Chairperson, Kyomugisha, who had been taking care of the boy since he was two months old, became angry on December 1st when the grandson reportedly stole 14,000 shillings from their house.
"At around 5 p.m., the boy returned home, and a furious Kyomugisha, upon seeing him, jumped on him and started assaulting him while the boy pleaded for forgiveness," Tibanyendera said.

Some neighbors who heard the boy crying out pleaded with Kyomugisha to stop beating him, but their efforts were in vain.
Rekyeraho Yubu, a resident of the same area, said Kyomugisha, holding a stick, dragged the boy into the house. "While in the house, the boy became unconscious, prompting the suspect to rush him to Kabwohe Health Centre IV, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival," Rekyeraho revealed.

The body was later transferred back home for burial, attracting concerned neighbors who gathered to understand what had happened.
Residents who witnessed Kyomugisha batter her grandson turned against her, accusing her of causing his death. The angry residents attempted to lynch her, but police intervened and whisked her away to Sheema Central Police Station.

Police stated that a postmortem report conducted at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital confirmed that the boy had been severely battered.

Yafesi Asingwire, the Karera North Ward LC 2 Chairperson, warned parents against using harsh punishments on their children, emphasizing that such actions can lead to poor mental health and even death.
