NAMISINDWA
A municipal engineer from Namisindwa Municipality has been arrested after allegedly fleeing to Kenya while under investigation for suspected corruption involving public funds.
The suspect was arrested after security and anti-corruption agencies tracked him to Kenya, where he had reportedly gone into hiding following investigations into alleged financial irregularities linked to government infrastructure projects.
According to sources familiar with the investigations, detectives are examining allegations of misuse of public resources, including irregular payments and the suspected mismanagement of funds allocated for public works.
The engineer was returned to Uganda and is expected to face further questioning before being presented in court.
The arrest comes amid heightened scrutiny of technical officers responsible for implementing local government infrastructure projects, particularly in districts where concerns have been raised about the quality of roads, public buildings and other government-funded works.
Namisindwa District has previously been the subject of corruption investigations involving public works officials. In 2022, former District Engineer Robert Mulekule Tululukha was arrested and charged with offences including embezzlement and causing financial loss following allegations of poor-quality works, ghost projects and irregularities in the implementation of government-funded projects.
Across the country, anti-corruption agencies have intensified investigations into local government officials over alleged procurement irregularities, abuse of office and the mismanagement of public funds.
Authorities are expected to arraign the engineer in court upon the conclusion of investigations, where he is likely to face corruption-related charges under Uganda's anti-corruption laws.
The arrest underscores the government's continued efforts to hold public officials accountable for the alleged misuse of public resources and to strengthen transparency in the implementation of government development projects.
