Two people have been killed by lightning in Kasese Municipality after seeking shelter under a tree during heavy rains.
The victims were struck at around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at Town Centre in Central Division, Kasese Municipality.

The deceased were identified as 60-year-old Banyenzaki Xavier, a businessman and resident of Base Camp Lower in Central Division, and Baluku Yeremia, a night watchman.

Police also identified another victim as a man commonly known as Kihara Isaac, a dobby.

Police said the victims were sheltering under a tree near their workplace, where clothes were being ironed, when lightning struck.

Maate Elly, the Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson, said the incident was reported at Kasese Main Police Station at around 4:03 p.m.

“The victims were taking shelter under a tree during the heavy rains when lightning struck them,” Maate said.

Maate said police visited and documented the scene before the bodies were taken to the mortuary at Kasese Health Centre III for postmortem.

“Our officers visited the scene, documented the incident and conveyed the bodies to Kasese Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem,” he said.

Note: Your copy says two people were killed, but then identifies three victims—Banyenzaki Xavier, Baluku Yeremia and Kihara Isaac. If Kihara survived, the story should state that clearly; if he also died, the headline and opening paragraph should say three people were killed.
