The Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) goes to the polls on Friday, September 26, paving the way for a new association president following the retirement of long-serving Penninah Kabenge. Her official retirement, after clocking the mandatory age, means the longest-serving Makerere University sports tutor will now watch from the terraces as a new dawn falls on AUUS’ top office.

While it has been widely reported that Agnes Baluka Massajja of Busitema University and George Wagoogo of Kyambogo University are the two front-runners to replace Kabenge, another vibrant contestant, Mustapha Nsubuga, has joined the race. Nsubuga, however, is vying for the 1st Vice President’s seat, even though he had earlier been shortlisted for the Vice President Technical position, which he has since declined.

Currently the Senior Sports Officer at Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) in Fort Portal, Nsubuga also serves as the President of the National Sports Officers’ Association (NASOA), having previously worked as the Butambala District Sports Officer for many years.

He is also a top executive member of the newly established Uganda Kho Kho Association, a discipline that recently took part in its maiden World Cup in India and returned with a bronze medal.

Nsubuga says he has what it takes to change the face of AUUS for the better, outlining his vision in a six-point program. “I feel I am the best person to serve as 1st Vice President because, based on my experience as a sports leader and what I want to do for this institution, I ask for the mandate of the electorate to give my best,” he said.

“I want to work on proper registration of our athletes to eliminate ineligibility and pave the way for systematic talent identification. I also plan to establish a close relationship with both social and mainstream media to publicize AUUS activities locally and internationally, as well as improve AUUS sports competitions, among other priorities,” he added.

The AUUS elective assembly will take place at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono, and by Thursday, Nsubuga’s only opponent for the 1st Vice President seat was Martha Soigi of Kampala University.

Other elective positions include:

  • President: Agnes Baluka Massajja (Busitema University) vs. George Wagoogo (Kyambogo University)
  • General Secretary: Patrick Ssebuliba (Victoria University, incumbent) vs. Hilary Godfrey Kimbugwe (MUBS), Dr. Baluka (MUBS), and David Busobozi (Uganda Martyrs University).

The AUUS electoral college is composed of Deans of Students, Sports Tutors, and one student leader from all affiliate universities.
