NEW YORK
There is a particular kind of fashion that only exists at the intersection of sport and mythology. It does not live on the runway. It emerges when a brand decides an athlete has transcended sport entirely — that their career has become culture. Adidas's "El Ultimo Tango" collection, released June 5th ahead of the 2026 World Cup, is exactly that.
"El Ultimo Tango" — The Last Dance — is Adidas's tribute to Lionel Messi's sixth and almost certainly final World Cup. At thirty-eight, the man widely regarded as the greatest footballer in history is leading Argentina into this tournament as defending champion. Adidas, partnered with Messi since 2006, wanted to mark the moment. They have done so with something extraordinary.
Twenty Years in the Making
The collection's emotional core is Messi's first World Cup in 2006. He was eighteen. The boots he wore that summer were the Adidas +F50.6 TUNIT — now a nostalgic cult classic. Twenty years later, the El Ultimo Tango signature boots pay direct homage: white base with sky blue and gold accents, filtered through 2026 engineering. A boot that looks like memory feels.
"We wanted to capture twenty years — the teenager in Germany, the frustrations, the heartbreak, the triumph," said Florian Alt, Adidas Football's senior director of product creation.
The Collection Beyond the Boot
The Messi AdiStar Control 5 lifestyle trainer mirrors the boot's palette. Pre-release waitlists exceeded 200,000 entries within 48 hours. The collection also includes retro tracksuits with gold detailing, premium graphic tees with a timeline of Messi's World Cups, and a $395 leather duffel bag — already sold out in multiple colourways.
A parallel Kith x Adidas x Messi collaboration, released May 29th, added six limited-edition sneakers. Together, the two releases have made Messi's farewell feel as much like a fashion event as a sporting one.
Sportswear as Emotional Archive
Most sportswear campaigns celebrate the present. El Ultimo Tango is explicitly elegiac — designed to make you feel the passage of twenty years, to compress a legendary career into a wearable object. Fashion critics have taken notice. "One of the most emotionally intelligent commercial fashion projects I've encountered this year," wrote Claire Distenfield of New York Magazine. "A tribute, a product, and a piece of cultural history simultaneously."
The Paddock as Football Field
With the World Cup underway, every close-up of Messi's feet does the collection's work. Lifestyle pieces are visible in stands across host cities, worn by fans who have traveled to see their hero one final time. In Miami, sightings of Messi in the AdiStar Control 5 trainers have generated their own social media ecosystem.
What This Means for You
Whether or not you follow football, El Ultimo Tango represents a maturation of the athlete-brand collaboration model — a shift from pure performance marketing toward cultural stewardship. Sneakerheads should chase the AdiStar Control 5 and Kith Handball Spezials. Fashion generalists can enter through the tracksuits and graphic tees. And if you have watched Messi over twenty years and felt that witnessing his career has been a privilege — then this collection exists, partly, for you. The last tango has begun. Dress for it.
